So the paddock filled up with the 600-700 Starters over Thursady, because the Friday starts early with the first free practices. We directly noticed the perfect organisation and the very friendly atmosphere The Track is 2.160m long and have a high clubsport niveau. We signed in at the class 7C, open for bikes with constructions from 1980-87, Harley Evolutionengines are limited there to 1200cc. So this is the class were all these racers met were the Bikes are to new for the “forgotten aera”, with too many valves equipped, or standing on the wrong wheels (17” was the standard). What makes an interesting field of 2- an 4 strokebikes, most of them from Japan. A bit scary was that we had to compete with Suzuki GSX R and Yamaha FZR 1000 5-Valves, on their hometrack, with their weather - because it starts to rain... Anyway, the Bike was on the Truck since the german Tuner GP at Hockenheim, 10 days ago, so we start to change the secondary ratio. While we do that we notice that the Gearbox, what shifted okay at Hockenheim, was now (after it cooled down) blocked. Another victim in the “Buell Gearboxes hate the Hockenheim Racetrack” list..... So next step, Gearbox out, check it -forget it and assembling the spare Gearbox.... Fridaymorning, Thors Hammer is raceready. Our old problem, bad performance after some good racelaps, we solved by adding a fuelpump, we thinked..... in Hockenheim Thors Hammer was running except a smaller problem on the End of the Parabolica ok. Here in Sweden now, in the first free practice the problem is back. What a f###! What all we had changed to find that problem, converted back to alternator, and were sure in the end that the fuelpump brought the solution. Now our old game starts, Jet gambling, right, left, forwards, backwards. Somehow we find a setup what is good enough, for a start in the rain from 7. At the race Tommy comes on 4th, when the loss of power starts and with some luck we finished 6th. I am not amused and talking about mounting a 15” over swedish Chopperfork by Tolle and retire the bike.... Tommy comes in and the bike is running only on one cylinder, thats something new because til today the problem was gone when the bike came in. And (surprise!) its the frontcylinder thats not working (we all time aimed on the rearcylinder). First check after 5 minutes, spark ok, floatbowl full with fuel. A look on the schedule tells us we have 24h, I said, if we need we put all in pieces, now we know the cylinder, now we find that problem. Ignitionside we changed more than one time everything. So its the fuel- or engineside we have to seek. I was sure it is a fuelproblem and start to inspect he right carb, -nothing. Like dozen times before I remove the clear fuelline and blow through it, and notice that it goes too hard.... The rightside fuelline is covered by one of this professional Nascar heatprotection overhoses to prevent the fuelline from the headers heat. Since begin of the season we inspected that line several time by blowing through it, but never removed the tight sitting protectionhose around, because the line was ok when we proof it. We remove the outerhose now and find that the fuelline got one day burned to the header (unvisible from the outside because of the protectionhose). But it happend that tricky way, that it burned a hole, but a flexible rubberbulb closed that hole directly. From that moment on, under the radiation heat of he header, this bulb expand to the inside of the fuelline and limited from lap to lap more the free inner diameter of the fuelline. Back from the track, with less heat, the engine worked fine again, like the first good laps we always had when we were going out on he track. Our fuelpump was not more than a help to push the moment in the future, when the fuelline get so much blocked that the cylinder shut off total. Guys, dont trust what you havent seen by your own eyes! Datarecording, A/F on track diagnosis, Dyno with brake... all that brought us nothing for a problem that shows up only on the track..... (-: A simple 1$ fuelline cost us in the end maybe the Thunder B.E.A.R.S Championship.... A concept is never better than the weakest point. All good now? A stressfree second race against the 4 cylinders? It looks like without some dramatic it dont work at the HBM Raceteam. Tommy had a great start and drive on til he reach the 3rd position. The complete race Sverre Saxegaard from Norway with a great prepared and piloted Honda VF 750 follow him mostly wheel to wheel. He finished the Saturdayrace 2nd and got also in the race now the second fastest Laptime. Johnny Nordberg from Sweden with his FZR is in front. Tommy is able to go the speed and follow the on 2nd racing norwegian GSX R 1100 pilote Oddgeier Mikkelrud -will Tommy get a chance on him? He push hard, than in the last lap, in the 2nd last turn before the finishline it happend, an Highsider catapult Tommy high over the bike, his reaction: Ellenbows on the fueltank, a hard hold on the clipons and full throttle! Hard he fall back to the seat and kick with his knee the rightside carburator out of the rubberflange. Thanks to Julius Ilmberger for his idea with he springs (seen it on your Leis BMW.... ) The carb is hanging a bit down but is not total out of position, so Tommy keep the 3rd when he go seconds later over the finishline. What a race, and what a fun to competete with that 140-150 PS HP Inline Fours! Not so bad for a 1200cc V- Twin Pushrodengine with 4 Valves -in total.... The spectators like it, not everybody know Buell and nearly knowbody believe that BMC celebrate the 25th year anniversary in 2008. |
What else to report? Great races, the Supermonos impressed me with their proffesionality, second race there won a finnish professional rider on a stock factory supported KTM Supermoto. John, born in England, but living since years in Stockholm, started with his self constructed Hybridengine. Original a Godden Speedwayengine, sucks the engine now through a new casted crankcase with reedvalves und blow the precompressed air over the cylinderhead into the combustionchamber. 13 Years of work John have in this project, the performance was not too much on this weekend, but the engine is running smooth and without any problems. Who is interested in Hybridengine history general and in this project, John finish these days a book about the Hybridtechnologie from the begin to today. It will come out shortly in a small issue, the price is fair, so if you like a copy, sent me a mail I will forwarded it to John. Not to forget the often original unrestorated great vintage racebikes and a big load of well constructed sidecars. Thanks to the MCHK club for a great weekend in Sweden, we see us this year again from 25. - 26. August in Karlskoga. |
